Western Market, Edwardian market building in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Western Market is a four-story red brick structure featuring classical facades with granite bands and a prominent arch spanning the main entrance. The building is divided into multiple retail spaces distributed across all four levels.
The building was constructed in 1906 as the North Block of a larger market complex, initially serving as a food market. A major transformation in 1988 converted it into a modern retail center.
The ground floor hosts textile merchants who continue the traditional fabric trade that defined this area for generations. These shops represent a living connection to local commercial practices that shaped the neighborhood's identity.
The market is located on Des Voeux Road Central and opens daily for visitors. The different levels are accessible, and visitors can explore each floor to discover the full range of shops and services.
The roof incorporates traditional Chinese pan and roll tiles that stand out against the Edwardian design of the main structure. This blend of Eastern roof forms with Western architectural style reflects how the building absorbed influences from both cultures during Hong Kong's colonial period.
