Zhangye Gulou

Zhangye Gulou is a wooden tower in the heart of the old district featuring multiple tiered roofs and traditional Chinese architectural details. The structure showcases classic construction techniques and serves as a focal point within the historic quarter.

This structure was constructed in the 14th century during the Yuan Dynasty when such towers served as vital timekeeping instruments for the city. A century later it was moved to its present location where it has remained ever since.

The name Gulou means "drum tower" and reflects its original purpose as a timekeeping structure for the city. Today visitors can still sense the connection between this building and the ancient rhythms that once governed daily life in Zhangye.

The tower is centrally located in the historic old quarter and is easily accessible on foot when exploring the main streets of the ancient district. Entry is affordable and opening hours align with standard visiting patterns giving you ample time to examine all levels.

The structure was actually relocated between two different sites, a rare achievement for such a large wooden building from that era. This move demonstrates how important the tower was to the city's planning and organization.
