Alte Reithalle, Cultural heritage monument and multi-purpose hall in Stuttgart-Mitte, Germany.
Alte Reithalle is a multi-purpose hall in Stuttgart-Mitte with a basilical layout, open gallery, slender columns and large windows in Renaissance Revival style. The structure was built from brick, steel and glass and contains two large chandeliers with 6.5 meter diameters.
The structure was built between 1887 and 1888 by architect Robert von Reinhardt and originally served Stuttgart's horse market and equestrian events. The steel construction with iron trusses represented an innovative technical solution for large-scale hall buildings of that era.
The building was once a working place for horse trading and riding events before transforming into a modern event venue. Today visitors gather here for conferences, exhibitions, and celebrations, creating a completely different purpose than its original equestrian function.
The building sits centrally in Stuttgart-Mitte and forms part of the Maritim Hotel complex, making access and parking straightforward. Visitors should note that the space hosts larger events and opening times vary depending on the program.
The oval arena displays a remarkable combination of 19th-century steel architecture with iron trusses that support the roof and create spacious interior areas. This system was revolutionary for its time and allowed large spaces to be covered without internal support columns.
