Domplatte, square in Cologne, Germany
The Domplatte is a large, flat square made of gray granite located directly in front of Cologne Cathedral. The space covers about 7000 square meters and is accessed via a major staircase from the station area, offering an unobstructed view of the cathedral building.
The square was redesigned in the early 1970s when the street in front of the cathedral was moved underground through a tunnel. This transformation created a quieter, more spacious pedestrian area free from traffic noise.
The square is easily accessible and centrally located, with stairs leading directly from the station. Be aware that strong winds can blow across the open space, especially during inclement weather.
A large cross-shaped flower installation on the square mirrors a similar one inside the cathedral. The stairs connecting the station were completed in 2005, significantly improving pedestrian access between the train hall and the square.
