Obersee, Lake in Schönau am Königsee, Germany.
The Obersee is a mountain lake surrounded by steep rock walls on all sides, fed by small streams and springs from the surrounding peaks. Clear water allows sight deep into the lake, while the surroundings consist of dense forest and bare stone.
A large rockfall in 1172 separated this lake from the neighboring Königssee, creating today's geography. This geological upheaval shaped the landscape in its present form.
The Fischunkelalm settlement near the lake is inhabited by herders during summer months who practice traditional alpine farming. Visitors can observe crafts and methods that have been passed down for generations.
The lake is only reachable after a demanding hike from Königssee and requires good footwear and preparation for changing mountain conditions. The terrain is steep and can be slippery when wet or snowy, so allow plenty of time.
Fish in this lake have adapted to the cold clear water and form populations found in only a few alpine waters elsewhere. These specialized species are a natural heritage of the mountain region.
