Schachenhaus

Schachenhaus is a mountain hut located in the Wetterstein range at about 1866 meters elevation, positioned along hiking trails near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The hut provides overnight accommodation with beds and dormitory spaces, and stands near an alpine garden with rare plants.

The hut was built in 1870 to support the nearby royal palace of King Ludwig II by providing accommodation for staff and guests. Its creation shows how this mountain area became important to Bavarian rulers and their mountain retreats.

The hut serves as a gathering place where hikers and climbers share meals and connect with the traditions of mountain life in the region. People here experience how locals have always found ways to rest and refuel while exploring these high slopes.

An alpine botanical garden grows next to the hut, where rare mountain plants from the region are cultivated and preserved. Few visitors realize that these special plants can barely be found elsewhere at this elevation.
