Flak-Kaserne Mainz, Military architectural complex in Mainz, Germany.
Flak-Kaserne Mainz is a military building complex in the southwestern Oberstadt featuring an H-shaped layout with sandstone facades and large windows across the northern side. The spacious rooms and high ceilings were designed to accommodate large military units and dominate the character of the entire district.
Built between 1938 and 1940 for the Wehrmacht, the complex sustained damage from air raids and later became part of Johannes Gutenberg University. This shift marked a new chapter in the site's history after the war ended.
The structure represents a combination of neoclassical architecture with regional design elements, reflecting the military construction standards of 1930s Germany.
The site sits at the southwestern edge of Oberstadt next to the main cemetery with its original guard building still visible at the Saarstrasse corner. It is easily accessible on foot and surrounded by residential buildings.
German prisoners of war and future students transformed the barracks into university buildings in just a few months during 1946. This rapid conversion reveals how urgent the post-war reconstruction effort was.
