Borsigplatz, Historic square in northern Dortmund, Germany
Borsigplatz is a circular traffic roundabout in northern Dortmund, encircled by multistory residential buildings of red brick. The surrounding construction dates mostly from the late 1800s and shows the typical architecture of a working-class neighborhood.
The square developed during industrialization as a central point in the working-class district north of downtown Dortmund. In 1909, members of a local sports club founded the football club Borussia Dortmund in a tavern at the square.
The name recalls the Berlin engineering company Borsig, which operated in Dortmund during the late 1800s. Today, people from many countries meet in the shops and restaurants that circle the square.
The underground station Borsigplatz sits directly at the square and connects the neighborhood with downtown Dortmund and other districts. Several bus lines also stop at the square and offer additional connections to surrounding areas.
Fans of Borussia Dortmund often come here after victories and march in long lines around the circular layout. The round shape makes the square a natural meeting point for such celebrations.
