Neuer Leuchtturm Wangerooge

The Neuer Leuchtturm Wangerooge is a navigation aid made of concrete on the northern coast of Wangerooge island. The red structure stands approximately 67 meters tall and emits a rhythmic light signal to guide ships safely through the waterways.

This tower was constructed between 1966 and 1969 to replace an older lighthouse dating back to 1856 that could no longer meet modern navigation requirements. The new structure represented advances in post-war engineering and lighthouse design.

The lighthouse serves as a recognizable symbol for people living on the island and appears frequently in local photography and postcards. Its striking red color makes it a reference point that residents and visitors use to orient themselves while walking the island.

The lighthouse is located on the island's northern side and is easily visible from various points along the shoreline. Keep in mind that the tower itself is not open to visitors, but the surrounding area is freely accessible and offers good vantage points for viewing and photography.

The tower's facade was changed from ceramic tiles to aluminum in 1982, which significantly reduced maintenance demands. This modernization shows how the operational requirements of navigation aids evolved over time.
