Alter Leuchtturm Wangerooge, Historical lighthouse in Wangerooge, Germany
Alter Leuchtturm Wangerooge is a white tower rising 39 meters above the North Sea coast with 161 steps leading to an observation platform. From the top, visitors can see far across the water and toward distant islands.
This tower was built in 1856 following a devastating flood in 1854 that destroyed earlier structures on the island. It operated as an active lighthouse until 1969.
The lighthouse houses a museum in its base with exhibits including old maritime charts, rescue boat models, and historical records from the island.
The climb requires good fitness since the stairs are narrow and steep in places. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for strong winds at the top.
Couples have been able to hold wedding ceremonies in the former lighthouse keeper's watch room since 1996.
