Port of Bejaia, Commercial port in Bejaia, Algeria
The Port of Bejaia is a commercial harbor on Algeria's coast divided into three operational sections: Avant Port, Vieux Port, and Arriere Port. These sections are protected by breakwaters and equipped with modern mooring systems to handle different types of vessels.
Phoenician traders established the first trading post at this location, which the Romans later developed into the ancient city of Saldae. By the 1st century, Roman ships were exporting wheat from this port to other Mediterranean regions.
The port received its current name, Port of Bejaia-Cheikh El Haddad, in 2023 to honor a resistance leader who fought against French occupation. This naming reflects how the location remains tied to the region's identity and past struggles.
The port can accommodate vessels up to 200 meters long, with a channel depth of approximately 13.5 meters for safe passage. Keep in mind this is an active working harbor where cargo operations and ship traffic are constant.
A dry port was built in Tixter in 2014 to enable direct freight transfer and boost operational efficiency. This satellite facility significantly reduces congestion at the main waterfront terminal.
