Monastery of Saint Matthew the Potter, Coptic Orthodox monastery near Esna, Egypt
The Monastery of Saint Matthew the Potter is a Coptic Orthodox religious site near Luxor featuring a three-story tower, a triple sanctuary church, and residential quarters positioned at the desert edge. The buildings display the architectural layout of a monastic community with distinct areas for prayer and daily activities.
The monastery was established in 704 AD when Saint Matthew the Potter from Bishnai completed his spiritual training at the Church of the Holy Virgin and settled here. This early foundation made it one of the oldest monastic communities in this region of Egypt.
The monastery walls display paintings from the 11th to 15th centuries showing Christ, apostles, and saints in the Coptic Orthodox tradition. These images shaped how the monks decorated their prayer spaces and remain visible throughout the buildings today.
The site is located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) northwest of Asfun al-Matana and can be reached via the road along the west bank of the Nile. Visit during the cooler months when daytime temperatures are more comfortable for exploring the buildings and grounds.
The refectory features nine cupolas positioned above nine bays and supported by pillars arranged in a square room layout. This constructive design creates an unusual rhythm and gives the dining space distinctive architectural character.
