Vallée des Singes, Sacred monkeys necropolis in Theban Mountains, Egypt.

The Valley of the Monkeys is a necropolis with multiple rock-cut tombs carved into limestone cliffs in the mountains west of Luxor. These burial chambers extend through several levels with intricate stonework visible throughout their interior walls.

The necropolis dates to the New Kingdom period when Egyptians buried sacred animals in elaborate tombs. The site was first documented by European scholars in the 1800s and subsequently studied in greater detail.

The rock-cut chambers feature depictions of baboons that held sacred status in ancient Egyptian religion, especially linked to the god Thoth. Visitors can observe these religious representations directly carved into the tomb walls and grasp the spiritual importance these animals held for the civilization.

Visiting requires hiking through rocky desert terrain, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential. Early morning hours provide the best light and most comfortable temperatures for exploring the tombs.

The remains of the baboons display bone abnormalities suggesting these sacred creatures lived in confined spaces during their lifetimes. These physical traces reveal much about conditions in ancient Egyptian animal shrines.
