TT50, Ancient tomb in Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, Egypt
TT50 is a rock-cut tomb in the Valley of the Nobles with multiple chambers whose walls are covered in painted scenes. The images show agricultural work, temple rituals, and how people spent their daily time in ancient Egypt.
The tomb was built during Pharaoh Horemheb's rule in the 18th Dynasty for a high official named Neferhotep. The inscriptions record events and honors that this official received during his lifetime.
The walls show members of Neferhotep's household performing daily tasks and ritual offerings, giving insight into family relationships and social roles of the period. Visitors can observe how these scenes reflect the values and practices that mattered most to the tomb's owner.
The tomb is located on the western bank of the Nile, across from Luxor, within the large necropolis of ancient Thebes. It can be visited as part of walking through the site and moving between different burial chambers.
An inscription records that Pharaoh Horemheb himself summoned Neferhotep to his palace, a rare honor for an official of that time. This detail reveals the man's importance within the kingdom.
