TT5, Ancient Egyptian tomb in Deir el-Medina, Egypt
TT5 is an Egyptian tomb in Deir el-Medina containing two underground burial chambers with walls covered in detailed painted scenes. Above ground, the structure features a small courtyard, a vaulted chapel, and a pyramid, while a shaft descends to connect the chambers below.
The tomb was built during the reign of Ramesses II and belonged to Neferabet, who worked as a servant at the temple. Later, Coptic inhabitants reused the space, leaving traces of their presence through burn marks on the painted walls.
The walls show family members bringing offerings to gods like Hathor, Re-Harakhti, and Anubis in ceremonial scenes. These images reveal how workers in Deir el-Medina understood their relationship with the divine and their dead relatives.
Visitors enter through the upper courtyard and proceed to the chapel, from which a shaft descends to the lower chambers. The spaces are narrow with steep steps, so movement requires care and attention.
Burn marks on the painted walls reveal that the tomb was revisited by Coptic inhabitants in later times. This rare layering of Egyptian and Coptic traces offers insight into how the site remained meaningful across different historical periods.
