Tomb of Sennedjem

Tomb of Sennedjem, Ancient Egyptian tomb in Deir el-Medina, Egypt.

The Tomb of Sennedjem is an ancient Egyptian burial chamber in Deir el-Medina reached by a narrow stairway leading to a small entrance area and a burial chamber with a curved ceiling. The walls are painted in yellow ochre with scenes showing farming, religious ceremonies, and daily life.

Italian archaeologists discovered this burial chamber intact in 1886, preserving the remains of more than 20 family members along with 165 objects. The find provided evidence of how multiple generations were buried together in the same tomb.

The painted walls show Egyptian gods like Osiris and Anubis, reflecting beliefs about the afterlife that were important to the people who built this tomb. These images reveal how the ancient Egyptians understood death and the world beyond.

Access to the tomb requires descending a steep stairway into an underground chamber oriented toward the west. Plan for lower ceilings in the interior spaces and wear comfortable shoes suitable for navigating the steps.

Nine family members received coffins for burial while additional relatives were placed directly on the chamber floor. This different treatment reveals variations in status and resources among those laid to rest together.
