TT44, Ancient tomb in Sheikh Abd el-Qurna necropolis, Egypt.

TT44 is a rock-cut tomb in the Sheikh Abd el-Qurna necropolis on the western bank of the Nile at Thebes. The burial chamber was carved directly into the cliff face, as was common for tombs from the era of the pharaohs.

The tomb belonged to Amenemhab, a wab-priest of the god Amun during the New Kingdom period of ancient Egypt. This era saw the Egyptians reach high levels of architectural skill and religious practice.

The tomb shows how ancient Egyptians honored priests of the god Amun by carving secure burial chambers into cliffs. You can see on the walls how important the connection between the living and the dead was to this civilization.

The tomb is located within a larger burial ground, so sturdy shoes are important for the rough terrain. Visits are usually arranged through guided tours of the necropolis, which help with orientation in the area.

The tomb carries the designation TT44, part of a numbering system that archaeologists developed to manage the many graves in this area. This numbering helped document and study the hundreds of burial sites methodically.
