Church of Saint Menas, Coptic Orthodox church in Fom El-Khaleeg, Cairo, Egypt
The Church of Saint Menas is a Coptic Orthodox church in the Fom El-Khaleeg area of Cairo, where stone columns divide the main nave from the side aisles. At the center stands an altar arrangement built according to Coptic church tradition.
The church was built in the 6th century and later rebuilt after it was destroyed in the 8th century. Parts of the original altar area and outer wall survived and can still be seen today.
The walls are covered with painted Coptic saints that follow an old Christian painting tradition. A southern shrine holds embroidered icons that show how this congregation expresses its faith through handmade religious art.
The church is open to visitors during the week and holds regular services for the local congregation. Visiting outside of service hours gives you more time to look around without disturbing worshippers.
The relics of Saint Menas were kept here for centuries before being moved to the Monastery of Saint Menas in Mariout in 1962. Few visitors know about this transfer, even though it changed the role of the church in the wider network of Coptic pilgrimage sites.
