Lake Langano, Natural lake in Oromia Region, Ethiopia
Lake Langano is a freshwater lake in the Oromia Region with brown, mineral-rich waters that reach depths of about 46 meters. It sits at an elevation of 1,585 meters with a large surface area and gently sloping shores.
The area around the lake was shaped by two major earthquakes in 1906 and 1985 that altered the landscape. These seismic events led to the formation of hot springs on Edo Laki Island.
Local fishermen still work the water using wooden boats as their families have for generations. Their daily catches of tilapia and catfish remain central to how people here earn their living.
The lake sits about 200 kilometers south of Addis Ababa and is accessible by road. Hotels and resorts line the western shore, offering a range of accommodation choices for visitors.
This lake is the only body of water in Ethiopia where you can swim safely, as it is free from parasites that cause Bilharzia. This quality sets it apart as a destination for water sports and swimming.
