University of Madras, Public university in Chennai, India
The University of Madras is a public university in Chennai, India, spread across six specialized campuses that offer programs in arts, sciences, medicine, and technology. Each campus has its own buildings for lectures, laboratories, and administration, while the main administrative offices are housed in the historic Chepauk quarter.
The institution was established in 1857 following the model of the University of London and emerged from a public petition of 1839 that called for higher education opportunities in the region. Over the following decades, it developed into one of the leading centers for research and teaching in South India.
The libraries preserve centuries-old palm-leaf manuscripts alongside modern scientific journals, showing the connection between traditional Indian knowledge and contemporary research. Students from all parts of India and many countries study together in lecture halls that combine Tamil architecture with colonial influences.
The campus grounds are generally open to visitors, though individual buildings may require registration for entry. The four central libraries house extensive collections of textbooks, manuscripts, and digital resources, primarily available to researchers and enrolled students.
Five Presidents of India as well as two Nobel laureates, C. V. Raman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, studied here. The institution also operates an observatory for astronomical research and a museum for anthropological collections, both accessible to academic visitors.
