Shimoga Airport, airport in India
Shivamogga Airport is a small airport located about 9 kilometers south of the city of Shivamogga and began operations in early 2023. The facility spans over 600 acres with a lotus-shaped terminal building, an asphalt runway, and aircraft parking areas.
The airport was planned in the 2000s but faced delays and setbacks during its initial development. The project was revived by the Karnataka government in 2020 and officially opened for commercial flights in early 2023 with a ceremony attended by major political figures.
The airport is named after Kuvempu, a celebrated poet from the region, reflecting local pride in his literary legacy. Visitors notice promotional banners for Karnataka tourism as they move through the simple terminal, connecting the space to the area's heritage.
Travelers should arrive early, especially during busy times or near holidays, as the terminal has limited capacity and few amenities. The airport is easily reached by car or taxi from Shimoga, with straightforward security checks and helpful staff for quick processing.
The terminal building has a distinctive lotus shape that sets it apart from typical modern airports and gives the architecture local meaning. This unusual design makes the airport instantly recognizable and creates a monumental appearance for a newly opened travel hub.
