Farnese Gardens, Renaissance botanical garden and archaeological site on Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy.
The Farnese Gardens spread across multiple terraces with twin square pavilions, stairs, and ramps leading from the Roman Forum to the Palatine summit.
Cardinal Alessandro Farnese established these gardens in 1550 over the ruins of Emperor Tiberius's palace, transforming them into Europe's first private botanical gardens.
The garden design reflects classical Roman architecture with quadrants surrounding a central fountain, following principles implemented by architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola.
Visitors can access the gardens through the Palatine Hill entrance and combine their exploration with nearby attractions like the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus.
The gardens' botanical legacy continues through the scientific naming of Acacia farnesiana and the chemical compound farnesol, derived from the Farnese name.
