Refuge Marinelli Bombardieri, Mountain hut in Province of Sondrio, Italy
Refuge Marinelli Bombardieri sits at 2813 meters elevation in the upper Scerscen Valley and is the largest mountain shelter on the Italian side of the Bernina Group. The building holds around 100 people with 186 sleeping spaces and dining areas.
The Italian Alpine Club founded this refuge in 1880 to provide mountaineers with a base for exploring the surrounding peaks. Over the decades, the facility was enlarged and updated to welcome more visitors.
The refuge serves dishes made with local ingredients, keeping alive the food traditions of the Sondrio valley. Visitors find themselves eating the flavors that define this mountain region.
Visitors reach the refuge via a marked trail from Campo Moro dam with about 820 meters of elevation gain over three to four hours. Good hiking boots and moderate fitness are needed for this walk.
The refuge operates year-round despite sitting above 2800 meters in a remote alpine zone. This steady presence in such a high mountain location makes it a rare and valuable stop for climbers in any season.
