Torrione prenestino, Archaeological monument near Porta Maggiore, Rome, Italy
Torrione prenestino is a circular funerary monument from ancient Rome with substantial size. Inside sits a central burial chamber made of travertine with three rectangular niches for burials.
The monument was built under Emperor Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC and ranks among Rome's largest burial structures of that era.
The structure became a tower during the Middle Ages and later served the Rufini family as a wine cellar. This transformation shows how ancient buildings took on new purposes across the centuries.
The site sits near Porta Maggiore and is well served by public transport. Visitors should expect uneven ground and wear comfortable shoes.
A hidden corridor connects the interior burial chamber to the outside of the structure. The entrance is positioned on the opposite side of today's Via Prenestina.
