Kitanomaru Park

Kitanomaru Park is a large green space in Chiyoda featuring winding paths, open lawns, and tree-lined areas. The park is bordered by moats and stone walls that recall its former role as part of a castle complex.

The land was originally the northern section of a large castle compound where high-ranking family members resided. In the 1960s, this area opened to the public and became a park for all to enjoy.

The Budokan building hosts martial arts events and concerts that draw visitors throughout the year. People gather here to watch competitions and performances in this historic venue within the park grounds.

The park is easily reached by public transport and has multiple entrances marked by historic gates. The grounds are flat and straightforward to walk around, with shaded areas beneath trees throughout.

A small section of the park remains residential today, home to a few hundred officials and their families. This makes it an unusual place where living quarters and recreational space coexist side by side.
