Shiodome Freight Terminal, Abandoned railway station in Higashi-Shinbashi, Japan.
The Shiodome Freight Terminal is a former goods station in Higashi-Shinbashi that now stands as a protected historic site. The grounds display excavated platform foundations and a reconstructed facade of the first station building.
The station opened in 1872 as the first railway stop in Tokyo, linking the capital with Yokohama. After Tokyo Station began operating in 1914, the facility served freight traffic alone until closing in 1986.
The name Shiodome comes from the tidal gates that once marked this coastal area. Today you can see track remnants and platform foundations behind glass walls on the ground floor of modern office towers.
The preserved parts sit on the ground level of the Sio-Site complex and are integrated into modern development. Visitors interested in railway history can find the ruins among skyscrapers and public walkways.
Excavations between 1991 and 2000 uncovered housing for foreign workers and early railway tools. These finds show the international contribution to Japan's modernization in the 19th century.
