Lake Aoki, Tectonic lake in Ōmachi, Japan.
Lake Aoki is a tectonic lake in Ōmachi, Nagano Prefecture, extending roughly 1.7 kilometers north to south and 1.4 kilometers east to west. The water reaches depths around 58 meters and sits surrounded by forested slopes.
This body of water formed roughly 30,000 years ago along a major fault line running through Nagano Prefecture. The geological structure created here separates the eastern and western portions of Japan.
The shoreline hosts cherry blossom trees where people come during spring to enjoy lakeside picnics and watch the flowers bloom. This seasonal gathering creates a sense of community around the water.
The lake is reachable by train via the JR Oito Line, with the closest station being Yanaba for a short walk to the shore. The area is accessible year-round, though spring brings the most crowded conditions around the cherry blossoms.
The water here is remarkably clear, allowing visibility to substantial depths, a quality uncommon among Japanese lakes. This clarity exists because no rivers flow into the lake, keeping the water exceptionally clean.
