Ōmachi, Mountain town in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
Ōmachi is a city in Nagano Prefecture located in the mountains between the Northern Japanese Alps and the Matsumoto Basin. The terrain spreads across a wide area and is crossed by the Oito Railway Line and several national highways that connect it to other places.
The area was part of the Matsumoto Domain during the Edo period before it became an independent municipality in 1889. The place gained city status in 1954 and developed afterward into the administrative center it is today.
The Chojiya Salt Road Museum displays objects from the time when merchants carried salt and goods between this region and the coast. The exhibition shows how this ancient trade route shaped local life and what goods traveled over the mountains across generations.
The city is easy to reach from outside by the Oito Railway and several national highways. It lies in the mountains, so visitors should expect weather that varies with the seasons and come prepared for different conditions.
The area is known for three lakes - Kizaki, Nakatsuna, and Aoki - spread across the higher elevations. During warmer months, water sports enthusiasts come for windsurfing, sailing, and fishing, making the waters popular gathering spots.
