Mesuriyama Kofun

Mesuriyama Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Sakurai, Japan

Mesuriyama Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound in Sakurai with a rounded section connected to a rectangular platform at its upper portion. The mound sits above the Hatsuse-gawa River valley and contains a stone chamber with many preserved objects from the ancient period.

This mound was built during the 4th century when powerful leaders were buried under massive structures. The Kofun period marked a time of growing wealth and the development of large-scale construction methods.

The stone chamber holds numerous iron weapons and tools that show how people lived and what they valued in ancient times. These artifacts reveal the daily life and social power of that era.

The site is accessible from the left bank of the river and welcomes visitors to explore the historic grounds freely. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the terrain is open and can vary depending on weather conditions.

Unglazed terracotta cylinders called haniwa surround the mound and represent some of Japan's earliest pottery art forms. These objects were crafted specifically for burial ceremonies and reveal the skill of ancient artisans.
