Otomeyama Kofun

Otomeyama Kofun is an ancient burial mound with a distinctive shape resembling a scallop shell, featuring a rounded rear section and a shortened rectangular front area. The structure extends across a considerable length and demonstrates the craftsmanship and importance given to burying significant figures.

The structure was built in the 5th century as a burial place for members of the elite of that period. Its chamber systems and multi-tiered stone construction show the funeral practices of the ancient Kofun age.

The tomb's name comes from local tales about a maiden said to be buried there, reflecting the spiritual importance of burial sites in that era. Visitors can see today how the mound's structure shows the significance these places held for the community.

The site is located within Umami Hills Park and can be reached through the central parking area. Marked trails guide visitors to the mound, making it easy to explore the archaeological location safely and conveniently.

The western side of the rounded section includes a specialized platform that was used during ancient burial ceremonies. This feature is uncommon and shows the special rituals reserved for high-ranking individuals.
