Shin-yama Kofun

Shin-yama Kofun is an ancient burial mound in Matsumoto consisting of two conjoined rectangular sections spanning 66 meters in length. The rear section measures approximately 33 meters square and rises about 6 meters high, creating a distinctive two-part earthwork.

This burial mound was constructed between the mid-3rd and early 4th century AD. The internal chamber was built using stacked river stones measuring approximately 5.5 meters in length.

Excavations at the site revealed numerous artifacts including a Chinese bronze mirror, iron swords, glass balls, magatama beads, and pottery fragments.

The mound sits at approximately 650 meters elevation on the northern end of Shin-yama hill with open views toward the Hida Mountains. This higher location makes the surrounding landscape easy to take in during your visit.

Archaeological excavations revealed various objects including a Chinese bronze mirror, iron swords, glass balls, magatama beads, and pottery fragments. These finds demonstrate connections to the broader Asian region during this ancient period.
