Kamenoi Bessō, Traditional onsen ryokan in Yufuin Onsen, Japan
Kamenoi Bessō is a traditional onsen ryokan in Yufuin, a hot spring town in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu. The property sits near Lake Kinrin and offers private hot spring baths alongside rooms that look out toward Mount Yufu.
The property opened in 1921 as a private villa under the direction of Aburaya Kumahachi, a figure who played a key role in shaping tourism in the Beppu area. Over time it grew into the ryokan it is today, welcoming guests from across Japan.
The rooms follow traditional Japanese design, with tatami floors, shoji screens, and wooden details that shape the feel of the stay. Meals are served in the kaiseki style, changing with the seasons and drawing on ingredients from the surrounding area.
The bathing areas are available around the clock, so guests can choose when to take a dip without being tied to a schedule. The property is reachable from JR Yufuin Station on foot or by a short taxi ride, making arrival straightforward.
The hot spring water rises from sources at the base of Mount Yufu and passes through volcanic rock before reaching the baths. This natural path gives the water a mineral quality that many guests say they can feel during a soak.
