Yufu, Mountain resort city in Oita Prefecture, Japan
Yufu is a city situated among mountains reaching about 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), with Mt. Yufu in the north and Mt. Kuro in the south. These peaks form natural boundaries and shape the landscape of the city.
The city formed on October 1, 2005, when three separate towns merged: Yufuin, Shonai, and Hasama. This consolidation combined communities with different backgrounds into one municipal entity.
Shonai Kagura performances preserve local traditions through masked dance rituals that tell stories about Japanese deities and historical moments. These artistic expressions remain visible during certain periods of the year and show how the community values its spiritual heritage.
The area features hiking trails throughout the mountains and hot springs scattered across the city. Visitors should wear proper footwear and consult information centers for directions.
Lake Kinrin displays a natural phenomenon in early mornings when geothermal water meets the cool surface. This steamy effect happens because of the temperature difference and is most visible in cooler months.
