Bōze Island, Small inhabited island in Himeji, Japan

Bōze Island is a small inhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea near Himeji with an artificial sandy beach and several fishing ports where locals bring in their catch. The coastline features harbor facilities, while the interior holds homes and local shops that serve both residents and visitors.

This island belongs to an archipelago of 44 islands in the Seto Inland Sea that has been known since ancient times. The artificial sandy beach was created in the 1980s and changed how the coastline is used for tourism and leisure.

The island is home to fishing families whose daily work shapes life here. You see boats at the harbor, smell fresh catch, and meet people who practice their craft as their families have for generations.

Visitors reach the island after a bus ride of about 20 minutes from Himeji Station followed by a ferry journey of roughly 30 minutes. There are restrooms, restaurants, and small shops at the beach, making it easy to spend the day there.

The island takes up less space than many visitors expect and can be explored on foot in a short time. What makes it special is the contrast between real island life with fishing boats and the artificial sandy beach that feels like a southern resort getaway.
