Sanno Hotel, Former hotel in Nagatachō, Japan.
Sanno Hotel was a hotel in Nagatachō located near the Hie Shrine and adjacent to government buildings including the Diet of Japan and the Prime Minister's residence. The building served as a landmark for upscale accommodation in this important district.
The hotel opened in 1932 and served as headquarters for military units during the February 26 Incident of 1936. It suffered damage from Allied bombing raids in World War II and was later seized by American forces.
The hotel was one of Tokyo's three leading luxury accommodations and represented Japan's early modernization efforts. It attracted wealthy guests and important figures, shaping the city's image of upscale hospitality during that era.
The location sits in a built-up area with government offices and is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors should note that the original site is now occupied by a modern high-rise building.
After the war, the American occupation forces converted the hotel into officer housing and used it until 1983. The site was later integrated into the base of Sanno Park Tower, one of the district's most distinctive modern structures built in 2000.
