Jitoku-ji, Buddhist temple in Bandai, Japan

Jitoku-ji temple stands on an elevated position near Mount Bandai, featuring traditional Japanese architectural elements and carefully maintained gardens.

Established around 807 AD by scholar-monk Tokuitsu, the temple housed 300 monks during its peak in the Heian period.

The temple maintains the traditions of Shingon Buddhism through regular ceremonies and houses a significant cupronickel vajra from the Heian period.

Visitors can reach the temple grounds by taking a local bus from Bandai Station, with seasonal opening hours varying throughout the year.

Archaeological excavations at Jitoku-ji have uncovered numerous artifacts from the 8th century, documenting the early spread of Buddhism in the region.
