東橋, Steel bridge in Shiroishi, Japan
The Azuma Bridge crosses the Toyohira River in Sapporo, linking the central city with eastern residential areas. It consists of three continuous plate girder spans that carry traffic on National Route 12 across the water.
The original suspension bridge was built in 1890 but underwent multiple rebuilds following repeated flood damage. Its current form resulted from a major reconstruction completed in 2013.
The bridge name reflects its eastern location in Sapporo and commemorates the then-Crown Prince's designation as the Eastern Palace.
The structure serves as a main traffic artery between the city's western and eastern sides and is open daily to through traffic. Crossing is completely free and accessible for all pedestrians and vehicles.
The intersection on the central ward side marks the starting point of National Route 275, making it a crucial transportation junction.
