童話館, Art museum in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
The Dōwakan is an art museum in Fukuoka Prefecture dedicated to original artworks and illustrations from children's books and fairy tales. The building has several floors with themed gallery spaces that guide visitors through different exhibition areas at a comfortable pace.
The museum opened in 1981, founded with the aim of gathering and showing the artwork created for children's stories and fairy tale literature in the Fukuoka region. Over time it grew to bring together Japanese and international works under one roof.
The museum displays original illustrations from Japanese and international children's book artists side by side, so visitors can directly compare how different traditions picture the same kind of story. Walking through the rooms, you notice how drawing styles, colors, and compositions shift from one culture to another.
The entrance is on the ground floor and the gallery areas spread across several levels, so comfortable shoes are helpful. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends, which makes it easier to spend time in front of the works.
The museum runs its own publishing house and bookstore on the same site, which means newly released children's books can be displayed right next to the original artwork used to create them. This connection between the finished book and the hand-drawn originals is something you rarely find in other museums.
