Roadside station Tanabe Ryujin Gomasan sky tower, Roadside station and observation tower in Tanabe, Japan
Roadside Station Tanabe Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower is a rest stop with an observation tower beside National Route 371 in Tanabe. The tower stands about 33 meters tall and offers a viewing platform looking out over the surrounding mountains and the Kii Channel.
The facility opened in 2012 as a rest stop along the Koya-Ryujin Skyline mountain road. Since then it has become a regular stop for travelers crossing this mountain route.
The tower's shape is modeled after the wood stacks burned during Goma fire ceremonies, a practice tied to Buddhist rituals still observed in the region's temples. Visitors who know this can read the building itself as a reference to local religious life.
The facility is open from April through November, with different hours on weekdays and weekends. Access to the observation deck may be limited on days with poor weather conditions.
The shop sells Shiitake-bushi, a local product made from dried mushroom shavings used much like bonito flakes in everyday cooking. The restaurant serves dishes made with ingredients from nearby Ryujin Village, a place known for its natural produce.
