Tanize Suspension Bridge, Suspension bridge in Totsukawa, Japan
The Tanize Suspension Bridge spans the Totsukawa River across a length of 297 meters at a height of 54 meters above the water surface. The construction consists of a narrow walkway carried by wire cables, stretching through the forested valley.
Villagers erected this footbridge in 1954 after collectively gathering funds to create a safe crossing. The new construction replaced a makeshift log passage that had been regularly damaged during high water.
The name Tanize refers to the local district where this footbridge stands, shaped by the narrow river valley. Visitors experience the structure primarily as a connecting path between both riverbanks, still used today by hikers and locals.
Visitors can reach this bridge by taking a bus from JR Gojo Station to the Uenochi stop, followed by a 33-minute walk through the forested landscape. Crossing becomes demanding in wind and wet conditions, so calm weather is recommended for a comfortable visit.
The floor of the bridge consists of wire mesh that allows a view of the flowing river below. This design reinforces the feeling of height during the crossing and lets you see the water directly beneath your feet.
