Rai-jinja, Shinto shrine in Japan
Rai-jinja is a small Shinto shrine in Asahi, tucked inside a modern office building on the eighth floor accessible by elevator and external stairs. The compact space features a traditional red torii gate, simple architecture, and offers an unexpected rooftop view of the surrounding cityscape.
The original shrine was founded centuries ago but was destroyed and lost after the 1855 Ansei earthquake. After World War II, it was rebuilt in the 1980s at its current rooftop location on an office building, symbolizing how traditional practices adapt to modern urban life.
The shrine is dedicated to Ukanomitama, goddess of grain and sustenance. Shop owners and office workers in the area regularly visit to pray for business success and protection in their daily work.
The shrine is open during daytime hours on weekdays and closed on some Sundays. A visit is straightforward since it sits within walking distance of several train stations, including Higashi-ginza Station a few minutes away and Yurakucho Station about 10 minutes on foot.
The shrine served as inspiration for a scene in the animated film 'Weathering With You' by director Makoto Shinkai. This connection to popular culture has brought unexpected attention to the quiet spot, drawing visitors from across the city who recognize the rooftop setting from the movie.
