Mount Kawara, Mountain peak in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Mount Kawara is a mountain in Fukuoka Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, with marked hiking trails that lead to the summit. The trails start near Gotoku Pass, where a parking area is available for visitors.
In ancient times, the mountain was a major copper mining area, and the metal extracted here was used in the construction of the Great Buddha in Nara. Mining activity left lasting marks on the landscape that are still visible today.
The Kawara Shrine at the base honors deities with roots in Korean spiritual traditions and reflects beliefs that have shaped the area for centuries. The shrine remains an active place where locals and visitors engage with these long-standing customs.
Gotoku Pass serves as the main starting point for hikes and offers a parking area along with clearly marked paths. The routes suit walkers of different experience levels, as the ascent is moderate and well signposted.
The first peak of the mountain is closed to visitors because past mining operations altered its upper terrain. This makes it one of the rare cases where historical mining permanently limits access to a summit.
