Tagawa City Coal Mining Historical Museum, Mining museum in Tagawa, Japan
The Tagawa City Coal Mining Historical Museum is a mining museum in Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. It displays tools, equipment, and reconstructed scenes from the working lives of miners who were active in the region during the coal industry's peak years.
The museum opened in 1983 under the name Tagawa City Coal Center, at a time when the local mining industry was already in decline. It was created to document and preserve what coal extraction had meant for the region before the memory faded.
The museum stands on the grounds of the former Mitsui Tagawa coal mine, and two tall brick chimneys from that era are still standing on site. These chimneys have become a symbol of the area and often appear in local art and photography.
The museum is in central Tagawa and can be reached by local train or bus. Allow at least a couple of hours to see the indoor exhibitions and walk around the preserved outdoor area.
Among the objects on display are personal diaries and drawings made by miners themselves, recording day-to-day life underground. These handwritten accounts give the visit a personal dimension that is not always expected in a museum focused on industry.
