Kamikoshikijima, Island in Satsumasendai, Japan.
Kamikoshikijima is an island off the coast of Satsumasendai covering roughly 45 square kilometers and stretching about 11 kilometers in length. The highest point, Mount Tomekiyama, rises about 423 meters, and three shallow lagoons lie along the northeastern coast.
The island preserves archaeological evidence from the Jomon period and later served as home to the Satsuma Hayato people during the Nara period. These early phases of settlement shaped the island's long-term development.
The village of Satō is Japan's largest settlement built on a sandspit, showing how people traditionally adapted to coastal living. The way the village is arranged reflects this special relationship with the sea.
The island is accessible via modern bridges and tunnels completed in 2020, connecting it to the neighboring islands of Nakakoshikijima and Shimokoshikijima. These connections make it easy for visitors to explore the region.
The Koshiki Daimyojin Shrine performs religious ceremonies directly at a sacred rock formation rather than within traditional shrine buildings. This unusual practice connects worship directly with the island's natural landscape.
