Usuda Star Dome, Scientific observatory in Saku, Japan.
Usuda Star Dome is an observatory in Saku equipped with a large reflector telescope and smaller refractor instruments for viewing stars and planets. The facility sits at an elevation of 935 meters on a mountainous location in Nagano Prefecture.
The observatory opened in November 1996 and transferred to Saku city administration in April 2005 when the surrounding municipalities merged. This change brought the facility under new management and expanded its public reach.
The Saku City Board of Education operates this facility to advance public understanding of astronomy through educational programs and guided observations.
The observatory is open to visitors daily and provides access to telescopes for viewing the sky. It helps to visit during evening hours when the night sky is darker and celestial objects are more visible.
The facility uses a flexible eyepiece system that allows people of different heights to use the telescopes comfortably. This design feature makes stargazing accessible to everyone regardless of their stature.
