Port of Miyanoura, Marine gateway in northeastern Yakushima Island, Japan
The Port of Miyanoura is the main maritime gateway on Yakushima Island, connecting the area to Kagoshima and Tanegashima Island through regular ferry services. The facility includes terminals and cargo areas that handle daily vessel traffic.
The port became increasingly important after Yakushima Island received World Natural Heritage designation in 1993. This recognition strengthened its role as a gateway for visitors seeking to explore the island's natural treasures.
The port area serves as a meeting point where visitors encounter local products such as Tankan oranges and items crafted from Yakusugi cedar wood. People passing through the space come to know the island's agricultural and artisanal traditions.
The port sits about 20 minutes by car from Yakushima Airport or roughly a 10-minute walk from Miyaurashomae bus station. Arriving earlier in the day works well since parking tends to be less crowded.
Near the port stands the Yakusugi Museum, which displays a cedar tree exceeding 1,600 years in age. This tree stands as one of the oldest living specimens visitors can encounter at this location.
