National Museum of Fine Arts Gapar Aitiev, Art museum in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
The National Museum of Fine Arts Gapar Aitiev is an art museum in the center of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It holds paintings, drawings, sculptures, applied arts, and ethnographic works displayed in separate exhibition sections.
The museum was founded in 1935, starting with a collection of 72 works gathered from across the Soviet Union. The current building was completed in 1974 and has housed the collection ever since.
The collection shows traditional Kyrgyz crafts such as felting, wood carving, and embroidery that remain part of daily life in the region. Walking through the rooms, visitors can see the materials and techniques passed down across generations.
The museum offers guided tours in Russian, Kyrgyz, and English. Visitors who want to use an audio guide should bring their passport, as it is required for identification.
The building was designed by architect Shailo Djekshenbaev and is an example of Soviet brutalist architecture that shaped many public buildings in Bishkek during that period. The exterior itself is worth a look before stepping inside.
