Church of the Resurrection of Christ, Orthodox cathedral in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The Church of the Resurrection of Christ is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in central Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, topped by several gilded domes rising above a white-painted building. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes and religious paintings, and a carved iconostasis divides the nave from the altar area.
The cathedral was built in 1944, at a time when Soviet authorities began allowing some religious activity again after decades of actively closing churches and restricting worship. It was among the first Orthodox churches to reopen in Central Asia during that period.
The church is one of the few places in Bishkek where you can watch Russian Orthodox community life up close, with people coming in throughout the day to light candles and pray before icons. Services are held in Church Slavonic, which gives the experience a very different sound from everyday life in the city.
The cathedral is in central Bishkek and easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. Shoulders and knees should be covered when entering, women traditionally wear a headscarf, and it is good practice to keep quiet if a service is taking place.
Although Kyrgyzstan is a predominantly Muslim country, the Orthodox community in Bishkek has had a steady center here for decades. The cathedral also runs social support programs for people in need in the city, which makes it active beyond Sunday services.
