National Library of the Kyrgyz Republic, National library in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The National Library of the Kyrgyz Republic is a seven-story building in central Bishkek that holds millions of documents in dozens of languages. It contains reading rooms, study areas, and specialized sections for different types of collections.
The library was founded in 1934 through a merger of the city library and the scientific library of Bishkek. From 1939 onward, it began collecting mandatory copies of Soviet publications, which formed the basis of its large holdings today.
The reading room dedicated to Kyrgyz literature displays works by local authors, including texts written in the Kyrgyz language as well as translations. Visitors can browse handwritten manuscripts and early printed books from the region.
Access is generally open to visitors who want to consult materials, though some sections may require registration. Arriving in the morning is a good idea, as the reading rooms tend to fill up later in the day.
The library serves as the official deposit repository for the country, meaning every publication released in Kyrgyzstan is automatically sent here. This makes it the only place where a complete record of the country's entire publishing history is kept.
