Kyrgyz Opera and Ballet Theatre, Opera house in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
The Kyrgyz Opera and Ballet Theatre is an opera house in the neoclassical style, situated on Arts Square in central Bishkek, with an auditorium of around 850 seats. The building hosts regular opera and ballet performances on one of the largest stages in Central Asia.
The theatre was founded in 1926 and quickly grew into one of the leading arts institutions in Central Asia. In 1939 it received the Order of Lenin in recognition of its role in developing theatre and music in the region.
The theatre stages works in both Kyrgyz and Russian, reflecting the country's two main artistic traditions side by side. Visitors walking through the foyer often find costumes or set designs on display, giving a sense of what is currently running on stage.
The theatre sits on Arts Square in central Bishkek and is easy to reach on foot from most central areas. It is worth checking the programme ahead of time and noting whether a show is performed in Kyrgyz or Russian, as no translation is usually provided.
The building was designed by architect L. Laburenko and is listed as a national cultural monument. A renovation completed in 2017 updated the stage technology and acoustics without changing the exterior appearance of the building.
